Afghanistan. Why Are American Feminists Silent?
Afghanistan falls. Again. Whatever modest women’s rights were slowly acquired or at least envisioned in the past twenty years will now disappear into the wind. Education, rape, forced marriage — any progress with respect to these issues is going to disappear.
Why are American feminists so silent? You had no trouble speaking up about Harvey Weinstein, Jeffrey Epstein, Bill Cosby — whomever might be the creep du jour, and that is as it should be. But when Afghan women and girls are denied education and held to the tribal standards of the seventh century… crickets. Nada. And what the Taliban do is far, far worse than any Hollywood producer or studio.
I will answer my own question, and you’re not going to like it. The women of the ‘progressive’ left don’t dare speak out against the Democrats’ catastrophic execution of the withdrawal of our troops for fear of losing favor for their broader domestic political agendas in Washington. Afghan women are left holding dust. Now can Joe Biden fix Afghanistan? No. The British couldn’t. The Russians couldn’t. Apparently we can’t either. But we don’t have to be silent. If American feminists are silent on women’s rights in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan… etc., expect to have less credibility on women’s issues here in America. If you are a feminist then be one. Wasn’t there a feminist expression “Women of the World Unite”? You might want to give that one a rest for a while.
All I’m hearing is crickets, baby. Crickets.
